How discovered:
Helena contacted me a couple of weeks before Angie’s Showcase to give modeling a try. The showcase was the first modeling I took part in. It was such an amazing experience that I fell in love with it and I haven’t looked back since.
Awkward Modeling Moment:
Emilia Torabi, German Embassy show in November 2010 - I only had the address of the embassy so I drove myself down for hair and makeup early in the day. I proceeded to knock on the front door where the ambassador's wife answered the door. After an awkward conversation figuring out why I was there, I realized I was not in the right place and had interrupted her day. She was eating lunch and getting ready to walk their dog. I felt so terrible and apologized many, many times. Luckily, she was very sweet and made some phone calls and got me the directions to the salon for hair and makeup. The show was back at the embassy that evening and she was hosting. So awkward!
Most Embarrassing Runway Mishap:
Walking for Micalla at OFW - My tight little black dress kept feeling like it was getting shorter and shorter. I can only imagine how embarrassing this could have been if I didn’t discreetly tug it back down. Reviewing pictures from the show after the fact, I guess I should have tugged it down earlier!
Most Bizarre Modeling Experience:
Samantha Sleeper F/W2011 NYFW Presentation at the Gramercy Park Hotel - The presentation took place on the beautiful rooftop terrace and I was so excited to be part of it. The models were put in place where we would stand for the duration of the two hour fashion presentation. Some of us were standing on the floor, and others were standing on dish crates (the type that get put through the industrial dishwashers). Not only were these crates unstable and felt like they could break any second, but there were also people inspecting every inch of my extremely form fitted lace dress. I’m still extremely grateful to have been in this presentation and it prepared me for the next time I feel like I might plummet face first to the floor while having a few of the fashion elite expecting a statue-like performance from me.
Favourite things:
FAMILY (my mom, dad, older sister Lindsay, my golden retriever Rocket, and my hamster Oliver), cottage life (camp fires, reading on the dock, wakeboarding, long summer walks), laughing with friends, watching hockey and movies, anything turned into a musical, summer BBQs, my MacBook Pro, Nike Free Runs, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Glee, HGTV, and Food Network. :)
Favorite music, band:
I’m pretty uneducated/lame when it comes to music. I love mostly everything. I grew up listening to my extremely talented cousins playing everything from Jazz to original pieces and think this is what made me fall in love with live performances. I love country music - Lady Antebellum lately! Others I like are: The Fray, Train, and old-school Beatles and Boston. Going through my iTunes I’m realizing most of it is Glee Cast remakes...does that count?
Favorite designers/models:
I always find myself browsing through bridal collections - Vera Wang and Jenny Packham have been rocking my world lately. Also, at last season’s OFW I fell in love with Label Clothing in Ottawa. I think Poppy Delevigne is a super beautiful and interesting model. I think I like the whole “blonde-feminine” thing because it is so opposite of myself - but she also wears the understated harder edge classic look so well...often with sneakers! Love it.
Favorite foods:
This could take a while - there’s not much I don’t like. I have an interesting story about the first time I tried an oyster...but I’d even be willing to give them a second chance. The short list of my favourite foods though: Anything spicy - I put Franks Extra Hot Sauce on everything! I love BBQ chicken, sea bass, shrimp, roasted garlic/goat cheese on, well...anything, homemade pizza, sweet potatoes, arugula, Subway subs, sushi, watermelon, and mangos. Dessert is also very important...carrot cake, cheesecake, birthday cake, my mom’s fudge pie/vanilla ice-cream, peanut butter cookies, and CANDY! :)
Hobbies:
I love to try new things and I’m always up for anything. I love sports such as ringette, volleyball, soccer, swimming, snowboarding, golf, running, and yoga - but I’m also known to rock climb, bungee jump, scale glaciers, and repel down waterfalls. Whenever I have time, I also love to paint and draw - most of my projects are given as gifts to friends and family when money is tight. I also love spending time with close friends when doing “nothing” almost always turns into some of my most unforgettable memories.
Style after work and at play:
I love to play around with my style, but I’m not sure if I’ve figured out an exact style persona for myself. I like to stay “classy”, but I’m also so active that this seems to have meshed with “sporty”. Think Club Monaco meets Lululemon meets a Giant Tiger budget. Interesting and sad, I know. I love a random punch of colour and I’m very inspired by fashion of the 80s.
Movie you want to see next:
I LOVE MOVIES! I have a bad habit of looking too far into the upcoming titles and the ones I’m excited for are: the remake of Footloose, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hangover 2 <3 Bradley Cooper, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2, and The Hobbit! Thank goodness for cheap ticket Tuesdays.
Most Embarrassing song on your iPod:
More of a guilty pleasure, the Hannah Montana Soundtrack. Amongst other Disney classics.
Dreams and Goals:
I have been very lucky in my life. Blessed with an amazing family and all the opportunity anyone could wish for. As of now, I am two classes shy of my BA in Communication/Public Administration from uOttawa and will finish those classes when I’m back in Ottawa or through correspondence. There are many things I’m passionate about and in the future I hope to combine my education, creativity, personality, and strong work ethic to achieve something great. I’m willing to work hard to get where I want to be. I plan to surround myself with people I love, who support me, and challenge me, and most importantly focus on happiness first. Through modeling I’ve recently learned that I also love to act. I’m ready to explore and dabble in all types of modeling and acting to show everyone what I can do!
About Angie’s - your agency/booker:
When Helena first told me to go in and meet Angie, I had no idea what to expect. I was not familiar with the business, and had only ever heard horror stories from other agencies. I was SO pleasantly surprised when I met Angie and Lou because they were so nice, and made me feel really comfortable. I’ve always been so impressed with Angie’s because everything is handled so professionally. I always feel important, loved, and I know I could ask them anything no matter how silly it seems. Angie knows each of her models and talent by name and genuinely cares about each of us. I truly appreciate all of the long hours Angie and Lou put in. They work so hard, are extremely reliable, and are always there to give an extra push of encouragement or piece of advice. Thank you so much for everything you have done for me, and all of the opportunities you have put in front of me. Miss you - X
